2nd Question- Where Do I Go To See My State Board's Approved Provider Criteria?
The question posed in my earlier article was, "Where do I find my license continuing education requirements?", in relation to LMFTs. In this article I will be addressing, "What is an approved CE provider according to my state board?", also pertaining to those licensed as MFTs. Gaining this information will help you search for providers of continuing education. After you have learned what your personal requirements are for continuing education, secondly, you need to know what is allowed from the CE providers.
Approved CE provider criteria will differ from one state to the next. Knowing your state's specific criteria will help you narrow the field of your choices. Before getting into where to find the answer to the question above, I'll go through some differences among the state boards on what determines an acceptable CE provider.
Some state boards require the CE provider to be approved by them directly. This means that the CE provider will have a specific provider number issued by that state board. As an illustration, for California MFTs, you must obtain your CE from a California BBS approved provider who has a valid PCE#. If your state falls into this category, Solicit for the provider number granted by your state board from each CE provider you investigate.
Some state boards will honor continuing education earned from national board approved providers. To illustrate, if the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) grants approval to a provider than an LMFT in Arizona may use them to earn their continuing education. So, those providers who have earned national approval, such as from the NBCC, can provide CE to those licensed in states that acknowledge such national approval, like Arizona.
Some states will honor continuing education courses offered by providers who have been pre-approved by a equivalent board in another state. To illustrate, MFTs in Colorado can earn continuing education from a provider who has received approval in California from the BBS, due to the fact that MFTs in California are under the regulation of the BBS. This explains the various approvals accepted by the different state boards, however, where do you go to find out what your state board allows?
Your state board's official website is a great place to begin. From there you will be looking for a link for the state board's rules and regulations (or statutes, rules, etc.). Next is finding the continuing education section within this document. The section on CE will describe the approved sources of continuing education. If you are an MFT in Texas, find the section called "Types of Acceptable Continuing Education". Here you will find if your state board accepts providers with approval from a national board, approval from another state board overseeing MFTs, or if they need to be approved by them directly.
Now you are ready to actually begin your search for the right provider, having obtained this other knowledge . This information will make things easier going forward. Make sure that CE provider states clearly which approvals they have been granted. If not there, move on. The next question in my series of question and answer articles will be "What limits are there in the amount of CE I can earn online".
