icelandic volcano flights cancelled
US Airports Cancel Flights After Severe Snow
After a troubled 2010 the world's airlines could have really done with a better start to 2011. The volcanic ash cloud that coated Europe and turned most of its airspace into a no fly zone was a financial and logistical nightmare in early summer. Then as people went away for the equally busy Christmas season, Western Europe was hit by blizzards it was ill equipped to cope with. Meanwhile on the other side of the Atlantic, the same happened to three New York City airports with nearly 7,000 flights cancelled.
And now it's back, assuming it ever really went away, and flightplans are going to suffer terribly. So, if you're away on your annual vacation or maybe even Weddings Abroad, prepare for the worst and bring an extra pair of socks. Domestic and International flights from and to the American Midwest were both heavily affected by a snowstorm that hit at the beginning of February. Airlines were said to have cancelled over 6,000 flights due to this, the seventh significant storm of the winter. Among the airports worst hit was O'Hare International, Chicago, which had to cancel all flights. Flights there and at neighbouring Midway airport were being considered just a day later. This was having a knock on effect in Dallas and New York. For flyers to the seasonably hot Caribbean, the Tropical Sky couldn't be further away from the grey, icy world they were trying to leave. In the low visibility conditions experienced in the midwest's skies, the plummeting temperatures contributed to a sense of hopelessness in the possibility of flight.
Somewhere in the region of 100 million dollars have been lost to the terrible weather this winter. Fortunately, flying is a growing business even today, and the summer season will likely claw back profits. The intention to fly is certainly experiencing not insignificant growth in the US at the moment. A number of new destinations, Dubai Holidays are benefiting from a renewed American interest in travel, even as India and China become more significant on the world stage in place of the Americans.
