Introducing The Sheltie Dogs

The dogs of the Shetland Sheepdog breed are also called sheltie They look like the rough-coated collie dogs, but smaller. Their muzzle comes to a point, ended through a round nose. Their round nose is at all times black. This dog has a muscular neck and a sturdy body under its coat. The breed is a small breed though only measuring 13 to 16 inches at the withers. It has a double dense coat that comes in a variety of colors like sable/white, blue merle, tri-color and more.

History

Some of the ancestors of the Shetland Sheepdog breed were border collies of Scotland. Those border collies were taken to the Shetland Islands where they were bred with dogs of the Icelandic Yakkin, which is a small breed that lived on the islands at that time. By the 1700s, the breed of the Shetland Sheepdog was fully developed. These dogs were great for guarding and herding the flocks of sheep on the islands. In order to maintain the useful characteristics of the rough collies, these dogs were crossbred with them along the years. The AKC recognized the breed in 1911 and it is part of the herding group.

Nature and Behavior of the Shetland Sheepdogs

The Shetland Sheepdogs are eager and willing to please by nature. They are obedient, loyal and alert dogs. They will always look for your attention and affection. When training this breed, the owner needs to have a firm tone, but stay away from speaking harshly for the best results. You need to socialize your sheltie since he or she is a young puppy.

Behavior problems can happen if the owner does not act as the leader of the pack. As their herding behavior is still present, the dogs of the Shetland Sheepdog breed should not be let loose without a fence or leash or they will chase small animals and even cars. These dogs could get hurt if not restrained in some way. Ensure them a large fenced backyard to run freely. The dogs of this breed get well along with kids.

Overall Health of this Breed

The dogs of this breed may encounter health issues like epilepsy, hypothyroidism and skin allergies. Eye malformations or other eye diseases are also quite common. Many health problems can be avoided by getting a dog that has been bred properly.

Of course, routine checkups at the veterinarian are required. Avoid also over feeding them. Properly cared, they will live for 10 to 15 years.

Grooming

These dogs have straight, long and water repellent topcoats. It gives the dog protection from the weather. Their furry undercoat is short and quite dense and keeps them warm. They shed twice, in autumn and spring. You need to daily brush and rake their coats. In order to avoid removing the natural oils from the coat, the owner should only bath the dog when necessary.

The sheltie dogs are wonderful family pets. Check out some breeders to see if it fits with you.
