Holidays To Gran Canaria: Visiting Historical Towns

If you are planning to spend your holidays to Gran Canaria, be sure to drop by the island's different towns. Many of the island's populated centers have a myriad of attractions that you can see and enjoy. Take for example, these three towns.

1. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
The capital of Gran Canaria. The city was in fact the very first stop of Christopher Columbus's expedition on his way back from the Americas. Residents celebrate the occasion through a ceremony called the Hermitage of San Antonio Abad where the legendary explorer prayed. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria also has a interesting attraction, the Las Canteras beach and diving zone, which is located right at the center of the city. What's more, this beach is declared as a protected area. Finally, visit other attractions such as the Museo Canario (the main archaeology museum in the Canary Islands), the Las Palmas Cathedral, and the Plaza del Espiritu Santo.

2. Aguimes
If you head east, you would arrive at the painstakingly preserved old town of Aguimes. The restoration, which is started on its old parish and square, recreates the calming air of an old traditional Canarian town. A few miles away are well-preserved caves in the protected area of the Guayadeque Ravine. Here you can find a beautiful church built into the hillside and restaurants that are constructed within a few of the caverns. Also, the region where Aguimes is located is world-renowned as a scuba diving paradise with its enormous marine reserves.

3. Galdar
North of Gran Canaria is a town called Galdar. A charming town, it is a great place to go if you want peace, quiet, and nature. You can see vast tracts of banana plantations, the town's main agricultural industry. There are also beautifully preserved archaeological sites such as the Cueva Pintada and Cenobio de Valeron's communal silos and tombs. You can also drop by the port of Sardina del Norte where Christopher Columbus got supplies for his expedition.
