In Boston Marathon 2010, American’s fall short
Hall and Keflilezighi weren’t able to bring the Boston Marathon title back to the U.S.--where no American has won since Greg Meyer in 1982. Last November was when the first American man, Keflezighi, won the New York City marathon in 28 years. But Runners World says that, including defending champions Deriba Merga and Salina Kosgei, this year's Boston Marathon on Patriot's Day was the deepest, most talented field in 10 years. Past winners Dire Tune, Lidiya Grigoryeva, and Catherine Ndereba also raced today.
The Volcano in Iceland affected the Boston Marathon
The Boston Marathon 2010 field of 26,000 runners could have been missing up to 600 runners on Patriot's Day because of the ash cloud over Europe caused by the eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano, according to the Wall Street Journal. According to the Boston Athletic Association, about 2 percent of the Boston Marathon field couldn’t make it. The highest profile competitor to scratch the race was Abdellah Falil.
Course map from the Boston Marathon
The Boston Marathon route is one of the toughest marathons to exist. Shortly after the 15-mile mark, the course goes up the Newton Hills. The Newton Hills aren't long climbs, but after 15 miles of running, they can be agony for the most elite runners. Heartbreak hill is the final climb in the Boston Marathon. Check out the video below.
