San Pancho Life, A Town Where Nature and Culture Interlink
San Francisco, also fondly nicknamed as San Pancho, is a charismatic, non-commercialized place in Riviera Nayarit. This warm place is a one-hour drive from Puerto Vallarta airport and sits near the mountainous Sierra Madre Occidental. San Francisco has striking, clean beaches and is covered with lush forests swarming with jaguar, reptiles, bird species, and some exotic animals.
Concise history
Indigenous tribes were considered to be the first residents of San Francisco. The Spanish soon came in Mexico, and in 1524, the Spanish nicknamed the place San Francisco de Azapan. People began trooping to San Francisco until its inhabitants grew. Still, it kept its quaintness and appeal as a humble, rural place.
The locals lived as fishermen and farmers, following a rather usual resident living. Apparently, San Franciso do not have the extravagant of urban living, evidence to that is the locals’ humble palapa homes, which do not have electricity nor water.
However in 1970’s, President Luis Echeverria have learned of San Francisco. In reality, he made his vacation home in the place, along with a hospital and a number of schools. With this, he planned to turn San Francisco as a independed place and a Third World community model. His plans, however, ended as his period ended. But the place continued to benefit from his plans. And it steadily turn into the place of what it is today.
The culture hub
San Francisco is advertised as the cultural center in Nayarit. This doesn’t have to be a surprise, since San Francisco has kept almost all, if not all, of the Mexican traditions. Aside from cowboys passing through the streets and history-loaded pueblos that decorate the place, a diverse art museums, shows, eateries, and tourist centers resonate with Mexican customs and traditions. The modernity of the times seems to skip San Francisco, as it continues with its culture and history whole.
Art admiration events are also celebrated in the place routinely, for one to give nobility to artists and in part to maintain the artistic responsiveness of the population. Art expositions and displays, for example, are put in diverse galleries in San Francisco. The place also celebrates an annual music festival.
The presence of the Huichol Indians in San Francisco also makes the place be more attractive. Their custom, town, artistry, and art crafts and handicrafts give another look to the innate splendor of San Francisco.
San Francisco enjoys an interesting mix of cultures. The culture of the locals plus the cultures of the foreigners housing permanently in the place make San Francisco a very culturally diverse community.
