San Francisco Mexico, A Town Where Nature and Culture Interlink
San Francisco, also fondly nicknamed as San Pancho, is a charismatic, non-commercialized city in Riviera Nayarit. This warm city is a one-hour drive from Puerto Vallarta airport and is situated close to the mountainous Sierra Madre Occidental. San Francisco has beautiful, clear beaches and is made with flourishing jungles swarming with jaguar, reptiles, bird species, and some exotic animals.
Concise history
Indigenous tribes were known to be the first inhabitants of San Francisco. The Spanish soon arrived in Mexico, and in 1524, the Spanish referred to the city San Francisco de Azapan. People began trooping to San Francisco until its residents grew. Until now, it kept its peculiarity and appeal as a small, rural city.
The dwellers lived as fishermen and crop growers, following quite traditional townsfolk lifestyle. Obviously, San Franciso lacked the grandiose of urban living, proof to that is the dwellers’ humble palapa homes, which do not have electricity or water.
However in 1970’s, President Luis Echeverria have learned of San Francisco. Actually, he built his vacation house in the city, along with a hospital and some schools. With this, he planned to turn San Francisco as a self-sufficient city and a Third World village model. His intention, however, ended as his term ended. But the city continued to gain from his efforts. And it gradually turn into the city that it is at present time.
The culture heart
San Francisco is touted as the cultural capital in Nayarit. This doesn’t come as a surprise, since San Francisco has kept most, if not all, of the Mexican customs. Aside from cowboys travelling through the avenues and history-rich pueblos that beautify the city, different art museums, displays, restaurants, and tourist hubs echo with Mexican culture and traditions. The modernity of the times looks like to miss out San Francisco, as it goes on with its culture and history intact.
Art related activities are also held in the city on a regular basis, in part to give nobility to artists and in part to keep the artistic awareness of the population. Art expositions and exhibits, for example, are staged in various galleries in San Francisco. The city also observes a once-a-year music festival.
The presence of the Huichol Indians in San Francisco also makes the city be more appealing. Their custom, community, artistry, and art crafts and handicrafts give a different look to the natural majesty of San Francisco.
San Francisco have an interesting mix of cultures. The culture of the dwellers plus the cultures of the foreigners living permanently in the city make San Francisco a very culturally varied area.

To the extent that it is culturally appealing, San Francisco is a stunning gift of nature. The breathtaking beaches that are a desired among surfers, the diversified population of animals, and the mountains and jungles to travel around are the gems that dwellers, expats, and visitors beloved to their hearts.
Though it doesn’t adopt the modernity of the times as much as other Mexican towns have, San Francisco keeps as a wonderful place to dwell in. Its peace is unrivaled, and its loveliness is like no other.
