The Holiday Business Has It Been Hit Hard?
So this ash cloud in Iceland has started have the airlines and tour operators really been hit that badly? Well in most cases they have been, and the obvious reason for this is the lack of bookings. It was amazing the clear correlation between booking rates and the ash cloud news. There was a very steep decline in bookings around Europe that hit the economy very hard. There are the specific areas that did do quite well. It was for those that organised either the local holidays or the Longer haul holidays.
People almost feel as thought they need to substitute something with another thing, especially if they have booked time off work for it. When some people found out they wouldn’t be able to fly, they did their best to refund tickets. Those that couldn’t actually book a flight in the future or get it transferred, decided to holiday at home instead. This presented the local businesses with a lot of money and the ability to boost local holiday areas. Whether or not this is a bad thing is another matter but all in all it meant that the money that would have been spent abroad, gets recycled back into the national community!
The reason that the long haul tour operators have done so well is because they can usually negotiate a longer holiday stay, and get something out of it. Buy doing this everyone is happy, including the customer and the tour operator. Because there isn't that much to deal with in reference to bookings each day, they can control numbers a lot more effectively. This means that negotiation with hoteliers and the airlines is much easier and a more personal relationship with the customer allows them easier routes to refund money. This relationship allows rebooking to be easier and more reliable.
Bali holidays have shown this works well, along with Maldives holidays and Barbados holidays. There are many travel agents that have even begun to start looking at whether or not it is a sensible idea to become Tour Operators. If we could bring a cheaper business into the tour operator world, travel agents could be dead!
